Power BI, Microsoft’s cloud-based analytics solution and data visualization tool, now supports Amazon Redshift.
Microsoft announced the new capability as part of its latest Power BI service updates late last week. It is currently in preview. Redshift support is being made possible by a new “data connector”, which is available in Power BI Desktop.
Miguel Llopis, a senior Microsoft program manager, wrote in a blog post, “This connector provides connectivity with Amazon Redshift in Power BI Desktop including both Import connectivity modes and DirectQuery connectivity modes. This allows full flexibility in terms of connectivity options to Report Authoring.”
Llopis stated that Redshift support will be added to Power BI Gateway and PowerBI.com at a later date.
Power BI already supports databases from Oracle, IBM and MySQL. Redshift connector allows users to access Redshift data, just like any other source. Redshift data can be imported onto Power BI desktop by users. They can then analyze and turn it into reports and share it with others.
Microsoft offers a step-by–step guide for accessing Redshift data via Power BI Desktop.
Llopis says Redshift has been “one the most requested data sources for Power BI in the last year.”
