Share this post Comfort is definitely one of them. It can be intimidating to switch to a different platform when your current one is working well. If you are already familiar with what you do, learning something new may not be an easy task.
Even if Windows works for you, you might be ready to learn new skills or simply want to improve your skills. Linux servers were once a popular choice for developers due to their perceived limitations. However, recent changes have made them more appealing to a growing number.
What makes Linux attractive?
Linux is an option that has emerged as a viable alternative to Windows for many reasons.
Total Cost of Ownership. The software and applications for a Linux-based system are usually free. The cost of purchasing an enterprise version is often very low, making it a good option for start-ups and small businesses.
Stability and performance. Linux servers are resilient to high-stress environments and don’t need to be upgraded or rebooted. These features are ideal for small businesses with limited budgets as they don’t require large IT staff or significant maintenance.
Improved Security Some features of the Linux operating systems, such as the fact it was originally designed for multiple users make it more secure than others. Linux servers can only be accessed by one root user (administrator), and applications and other users rarely have access to the kernel. This means that most viruses cannot attack Linux systems simply because they are designed to do so.
Enhanced Customization. Linux’s open-source nature allows users to modify almost every aspect of their system, creating exactly what they want.
There are some limitations to moving to Unix-based servers, especially in the area of scaling. You may find that Linux servers don’t always work with the technology used to build your website. In this case, a Windows-based server would be a better choice. Again, it is important to have a good working relationship with your technical support team and to be familiar with the technology.
Making the Switch
There are some things that you can do to make the switch from Windows to Linux easier.
1. Get training
To ensure that you are fully conversant with Linux before you make the transition, it is worth spending some time learning Linux training. You can learn the basics of Linux technology through online training videos, user forums, or Linux guides.
2. Join a Linux Community
There are many Linux communities online where you can find how-tos, ask questions and get advice. These communities can help you get the help you need when it is most needed.
3. Install Linux on a “Practice Computer”
Some programmers recommend a dual installation, which allows you to run both Windows and Linux on one machine. However, this approach can lead to disaster. It is better to install Linux on another machine so you can practice the technology and get used to it in a safe environment. You can continue using your old OS on your original machine as usual, and then only switch to Linux when you feel comfortable with it. You will have better luck with computers with Intel processors and video card than with AMD. AMD will work, but Linux and Intel have worked closely together so the technology tends be more compatible.
4. Try Other Applications
Although you can do many of the same things on Linux as on Windows, you shouldn’t expect them to work exactly the way. You won’t find the exact same applications on Linux as you will on Windows. Even cross-platform applications may have differences. You should be open to trying different applications to find the one that best suits your needs.
ITProTV’s Linux for Beginners introductory program will help you get started with Linux.
5. Expect a Learning Curve
Even if Windows is your favorite operating system, you still need to learn Linux. You won’t become an expert in Windows in a day. Don’t expect to be an expert in Linux. You will experience frustrations as you learn the new platform. Take your time and be open to learning.
It doesn’t matter if you are switching to Linux because of business reasons or because you want to learn a new operating systems for fun or expand your skills. Be patient and seek out help if you have questions.
